Hey everyone,
I've been diving deep into the tragic events surrounding the Haven family's murder and the subsequent lynching of Charles Bannon, and something keeps gnawing at me. The Haven family was known to be well-off for their area, owning a piano, a radio, and quite a bit of livestock and machinery. Back in 1930, those possessions indicated a level of wealth and comfort that wasn't the norm for everyone around Schafer.
Here's my thought: Could this tragic event have been driven, at least in part, by jealousy or greed? I know Bannon claimed to have rented the property and seemed to be trying to fit into their life, but what if there was more to it? Was there a perception of the Havens being better off that could have heightened tensions or motivated others to act out in such a gruesome manner?
Curious if anyone else has looked into this angle or has thoughts on community dynamics back then. It's just so hard to comprehend why someone would do something so horrific to an entire family. My heart goes out to any remaining family members who might still be haunted by these events. Such a terrible tragedy all around.
Looking forward to hearing your insights.
Stay safe,
