I've been reading up on the tragedy involving Deputy Sheriff Robert Gardner, and one detail that really stands out to me is the role of the strikebreakers during this time. It's such a difficult position to be in, caught in the tension between strikers and their employers. These non-union workers, often just individuals trying to make a living themselves, were escorted by Deputy Gardner and his team into a highly volatile situation. The entire incident is such a poignant reminder of how complicated these labor disputes were, with lives being lost on both sides. It breaks my heart thinking about the pressures and fears everyone involved must have faced. And for Deputy Gardner and others to have lost their lives over such disputes, it’s truly a tragedy that highlights the high stakes of that era's labor conflicts. My thoughts are with Deputy Gardner's family, even all these years later, as it's important to recognize the sacrifices made by those who served and protected during such turbulent times.
