I was just reading about Officer John Dickerson Newby, and I can't help but think about how dangerous it must have been for officers back in the day without the modern technology we have now. It's not like they had radios or backup just a call away. Responding to the sound of gunfire in a dark alley must have been terrifying. It’s so sad to think about the risks they had to take with limited resources. I hope the community back then came together to support his family after such a senseless loss. It's a stark reminder of the sacrifices officers make, even a century ago. Anyone have more info on how police procedures were then, or if the community did anything in his memory?

I’ve been thinking a lot about the setting of the alley where Officer Newby was shot. It feels like we overlook the significance of these locations sometimes. Dark alleys have a reputation, sure, but they also hold stories of everyday life—until something tragic happens, like in Newby’s case. Given that the shooting occurred in 1919, I wonder about the state of the area back then. Was it a busy place prone to trouble, or more of a secluded spot that made ambushes easier? And how terrifying it must have been for the community knowing someone could just open fire that close to home. My heart goes out to Newby’s family and everyone who lived in that neighborhood at the time. I hope someone out there has more details or historical photos that could shed light on what the area was really like back then.
