Officer Hurst's case has always stuck with me, especially knowing it takes place over a year. My thoughts go out to his family and colleagues who watched him endure such a long and painful journey. It's gut-wrenching to think of the struggle he must have faced in that time, both for him and his loved ones who had no choice but to wait and worry.
It's also disturbing to consider how someone could gain access to his weapon. Law enforcement protocols around firearm access have evolved since then, but this incident highlights why those changes are so critical. It makes you wonder about the procedural gaps back in 1956 and how this case might have pushed for improvements.
If anyone has more detailed info on how his gun was accessed or any procedural reviews that followed, I'd love to hear it. These stories serve as such important lessons, both in honoring his service and in preventing the same from happening again.
