I’ve been following Leroy Butler’s case for a while now, and something that’s always intrigued me is the role technology (or the lack thereof) might have played in his disappearance. Remember, this was 2001—cell phone GPS wasn't as precise or widespread as it is today. Butler’s cell phone records indicate he was near Birmingham, Alabama, after last being seen in Memphis.
How reliable was this kind of data back then? Could technological limitations have led to false conclusions about his movements? It's baffling how his car ended up in Bolivar, yet his phone pinged from Alabama. Does anyone here have insight into cell tower accuracy from that time period? Maybe someone knows how law enforcement would have interpreted this type of data in a missing person case back then? This piece of the puzzle keeps haunting me because it feels like a critical clue that might have been misunderstood or overlooked.
