Has anyone else looked into the angle of the boys maybe knowing more about that cave system than anyone realized? Given that Joel was so into geology and caves, he might have felt confident about exploring. It's possible they found or planned to explore a part of the cave that wasn't on anyone's maps, possibly even a part that only they knew about.
Could it be that they found an entrance that was missed during the searches? Especially with all the construction work going on, there might have been temporary openings that nobody else knew about. Maybe they ventured into an area they believed to be safe, thinking it was a thrilling adventure, much like Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer from Twain's stories. Even with the tragedy of the cave-in, it's haunting to think they may have managed to get somewhere else entirely, somewhere we've yet to find.
Guess it's just another piece of the puzzle that we'll never have all the answers to, but it makes you wonder just how many undiscovered parts of Murphy's Cave might still be hiding secrets.
Hey everyone, I've been fascinated by the Joel Hoag, Billy Hoag, and Craig Dowell disappearance and I've been diving into discussions about the various search efforts that took place back then. Did anyone else read about the role of the Missouri National Guard and how rare it was for them to get involved in searches like this back in the '60s? It sounds like they really pulled out all the stops for those kids, turning it into the largest cave search of its time. It makes me wonder if their involvement might have unearthed any overlooked pieces of information that later got buried under all the attention on the cave-in theory. Anyone else think there might be records or reports from their side that could shine some light on possible oversights? Curious to hear your thoughts.
