Edwin Reyes, a 23-year-old Hispanic man, was shot on the 600 block of Longfellow Street NW in Brightwood late one November night in 2009. He lived on the 5500 block of 7th Street NW and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries. Authorities described the killing as a senseless act of violence and opened a homicide investigation.

Friends, family, and neighbors established a memorial on Longfellow Street after his death. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.
