Derrick Rawls, 20, was fatally shot in an alley in the 4500 block of 8th Street NW in Petworth on the evening of Friday, February 4, 2011. Around 9:20 p.m. gunfire was reported; officers from the Fourth District found Rawls unconscious and unresponsive with gunshot wounds. Emergency medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The Homicide Branch opened an investigation and the Metropolitan Police Department appealed to the public for help, offering a significant reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. In the days after the shooting no suspect had been identified and no arrests were made, and the case remained unsolved.
