I’ve been diving in the Florida Keys a number of times, and the conditions can change rapidly, even for experienced divers. The area around Cocker Reef can be particularly tricky with its strong currents. The fact that Tatyana Smirnov's diving partner lost sight of her so quickly makes me wonder if perhaps she got caught in an unexpected current. I've read cases where divers get separated because they misjudge how fast they're being pulled by the water. It's so tragic that they found her equipment but no trace of her. Has anyone heard about visibility conditions on that day? It might provide some clues as to why her partner couldn't spot her in time.
