I’ve been thinking a lot about Ti’Teauna Antunya Riggs’ case and the ripple effect it's had on the Birmingham community. The fact that local residents and activists are calling for more attention to violence is a testament to how shaken everyone is. Ti’Teauna was just 19 with what everyone says was a bright future ahead of her. It’s incredibly upsetting to think about not just her loss, but also how her friends, family, and community have to somehow make sense of this tragedy. More than just seeking justice for Ti’Teauna, we need to address these systemic issues of violence so that no more lives are lost like hers. Anyone else feeling like this is just too frequent a story? Let’s keep her family in our thoughts. They’re living the worst nightmare, and it’s important we continue to support their calls for change. It's time for stronger measures to make the community safer for everyone.
