Pernell Lonnie Dawkins, 43, was shot in the 300 block of Ridge Road SE in Southeast Washington, D.C., in the early morning hours of July 17, 2011. The single gunshot at about 2:31 a.m. left him paralyzed; he was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later transferred to a Maryland rehabilitation center for ongoing care.

Mr. Dawkins died on March 14, 2012, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore ruled his death a homicide due to the gunshot wound he suffered in July 2011. The Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch is handling the investigation; no suspects have been publicly identified and no arrests have been announced.
