On the afternoon of Thursday, May 16, 2013, police were called to an apartment in the 1200 block of Talbert Street SE and found 28-year-old Charles Anthony Garris with an apparent gunshot wound. He was a resident of Southwest D.C.; the Metropolitan Police Department declared his death a homicide on Saturday, May 18, 2013, and the cause of death was confirmed as a shooting.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at St. Matthews Baptist Church in Southeast D.C. No suspects, arrests, motive, or publicly disclosed persons of interest have been announced, and the circumstances that placed him in that apartment that afternoon remain unclear.
