Van Joyner, 36, was shot in the pre-dawn hours of October 31, 2015, on the 1000 block of Savannah Street SE in Southeast Washington, D.C. Police arrived about 2:48 a.m. to find him suffering multiple gunshot wounds; he was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and died on November 1. His death came during a year of rising homicides in the District.

The Metropolitan Police Department opened an investigation and appealed to the public for help, offering a substantial reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. No motive, suspects, or arrests have been publicly released and the investigation remains open.
