In searching for updates about this case, I found this forum post. I am sorry my response is two years later.
I was Davane's teacher and I helped eulogize him at his funeral.
I have not kept in touch with his family like I should have. His mother is a Jamaican citizen. His father lives out of state. His aunt is local. I am unaware of what sort of contact they have with the prosecutor's office, but I imagine that they are aware of resources for victim's services.
I am in close contact with Davane's girlfriend, who (despite all this) thrived. She obtained her GED, attended some college, and remains gainfully employed. She and I are in the same boat--since we are not family, there's not much we can do besides follow the case on the DC Superior Court website. It was there that I learned that the trial is now set to begin in February 2026.
As of right now, I would like to attend. I am not sure that I will. I think it's important for Davane's friends, colleagues, and extended circle to be represented in the gallery. Yet, it's still quite painful. And the length of time it's taken makes it worse.
Davane was a good person who did not deserve to die like this. Likewise, I am sure that the accused killer has loved ones who did not want this for his future, either.
