The other day I was reading about the incident involving First Lieutenant Brandon Keyon Moultrie in Fairbanks, and something really struck me—how senseless this act of violence was. It's utterly mind-numbing to think that Moultrie, who dedicated his life to serving and protecting others, could become a victim in such a random and unnecessary altercation. What really bothers me is the level of recklessness displayed by the suspects, Snipes and Makkar. It's wild to consider that Snipes could bring a gun into a confrontation and somehow think that it could solve whatever issue they had. Instead, it led to the death of an innocent man who had absolutely nothing to do with their dispute. I can't even begin to imagine what Moultrie's family and colleagues at Fort Wainwright must be going through. To lose someone so accomplished and driven, it just feels like such a waste of potential and a lifetime of achievements cut far too short. With all the work Moultrie did, from earning his master's degree to his compassionate volunteer efforts, his absence will certainly leave a massive void. It's a real call to action for all of us to think about promoting community safety and responsibility.
