I’ve been following the case of Antonio Devon Coleman and wanted to touch upon the community's role in this tragedy. It’s tragic every time a life is lost to violence, and it’s devastating to see this happen close to home. I’ve read that Coleman’s death is the 86th homicide in Birmingham this year and it makes me wonder about what deeper issues are at play here. There’s talk about needing more efforts to address the causes of this violence, and I wholeheartedly agree. Beyond stricter policing, there must be a broader focus to bring about change. Whether it's increasing community outreach, better resources for mental health, or economic opportunities, something has to improve. The continued loss of lives is a call for us to do better as a society. My thoughts are with Antonio Coleman's family and friends. I can’t even imagine the pain they must be going through right now. Let’s hope that with more involvement from the community, we can help to shed light on what happened and help bring some justice to his loved ones.
