I've been thinking a lot about the horrendous tragedy involving Brandy Lee Moore Ballard, and my heart truly goes out to her family and everyone she touched with her generous spirit. What gets me is how these illegal street races continue to wreak havoc. I read somewhere recently about the adrenaline rush that drives people to race, but it baffles me how someone can prioritize that thrill over the safety of others.
Brandy wasn't out there early in the morning to be a part of any race; she was likely living her normal routine. She spent her life giving care to others, and it's so unfair that a reckless act deprived so many of her warmth and kindness. I can't shake off the thought of what her last moments might have been like and how they could have been prevented had someone been more responsible.
I really hope the ongoing efforts by Birmingham PD can lead to some real change. They might not bring Brandy back, but maybe they can prevent someone else from experiencing a similar loss. This case is a stark reminder of how precious and fragile life is. How do we make people understand the real, human cost of these selfish races? If anyone else is from the Birmingham area, have you noticed a crackdown on racing since this happened?
