I was reading about Carlos Mines’ tragic death and can’t help but think about the timing and location of this incident. It's so unsettling that it happened right in front of Birmingham Fire Station No. 18. You’d imagine being that close to first responders would provide some kind of aid or deterrent, yet it seems it wasn’t enough to prevent this terrible act. The fact that it initially seemed like a car accident until they discovered he’d been shot is just chilling. My heart goes out to Carlos’s family and friends; it must be excruciating to deal with such an unexpected loss and the uncertainty that remains with no arrests made. I hope the uptick in crime in Birmingham gets the attention it desperately needs, so fewer families have to go through such pain.
