I just can't stop thinking about Kenneth Gilchrist's story. The fact that he reportedly begged for help for an hour before passing away is deeply troubling and just awful. How can we expect people to serve their time and come out reformed if they're not even granted basic medical care when they need it the most? I've been looking into the rate of violence within Alabama's prison system, and it seems that these kinds of incidents are alarmingly common. The Justice Department's findings from 2019 detailed how dire the situation has been, yet it feels like not much has changed since then. If anything, it seems to be getting worse, with back-to-back murders happening in the span of just a week. I hope this case brings attention to the immediate need for reform. No one deserves to die like that, especially when the system has an obligation to protect every person in its care, no matter their past. My heart goes out to Kenneth's family and friends.
