I’ve been thinking a lot about the reported back injury that Rick mentioned in his last message. I’m no expert, but as someone who hikes fairly often, I’m curious about how severe his injury might have been. The Lost Coast Trail is no joke, and with an injury, navigation could become increasingly difficult, especially near Miller Flat where the terrain is tough. If his injury was debilitating, would he have been able to move or set up some sort of signal for rescuers? It seems like the search area was pretty concentrated, given the recovered items, but I just wonder if a thorough scan of nearby hidden areas or trails less traveled could provide some clues. Anyone else with hiking experience have thoughts on this?

I've been following Rick's case closely and something about the Miller Flat area keeps sticking with me. I read through some older threads about that section of the Lost Coast Trail, and it seems like it can be pretty rugged and hard to navigate. It's surprising how easily one could get stuck or fall in that kind of terrain, especially if you're on your own with a back injury. I remember seeing a post mentioning that his gear was found, but nothing about a campsite or signs of where he might have stopped to rest. Has anyone else looked into how often hikers actually go missing or get injured around that spot? There must be some reports or statistics that could shed more light on the dangers specific to that part of the trail. Hoping we can share more insights or similar cases here—it just might help.
