I’ve been thinking a lot about Marlo Williams and how the use of social media by perpetrators in crimes like his highlights a disturbing trend. It’s truly upsetting that someone would not only commit such a violent act but then choose to share it on Snapchat, further dehumanizing the victim. This adds an extra layer of cruelty and disrespect that Marlo’s family and friends shouldn’t have to endure on top of their loss. It’s also a wake-up call about how some young people, like 16-year-old Sebastian Vaughn, view digital platforms—not just as means of communication, but as ways to boast about horrific acts. To this day, I just can’t wrap my head around why he’d risk everything, including his own future, by doing such a senseless and dangerous thing. My heart goes out to everyone who is mourning Marlo and trying to make sense of what happened. This should remind us all about the importance of educating young people on empathy, consequences, and the value of human life. Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts on how social media’s role in these types of cases can be addressed.
