I just came across the tragic story of Jermaine Julius, one of the many lives lost to violence in Philadelphia back in 2009. What really struck me is how Jermaine's death represents a much larger issue that was happening in the city at that time. February 2009 saw an alarming spike in violence, with 42 murders reported—and Jermaine was one of the souls lost in that month. It makes me think a lot about the systemic problems that contributed to this.
I can’t even begin to imagine the pain his family must still feel, knowing that his case was part of such a grim statistic that year. But I also wanted to highlight something meaningful I found—the Philadelphia Obituary Project. They try to make sure people like Jermaine aren't part of a forgotten list, but remembered as the individuals they were. This project really resonates with me, as it feels like such a crucial way to bring light to the victims' stories, showing us the human lives behind the numbers we so often hear. My thoughts go out to all the families dealing with such losses; may we find ways to address the root causes of these tragedies.
