Does anyone have any thoughts on the fact that David Andrew Rusch's life jackets were found on board his dory? It's just peculiar to me that someone who would set out for a day of fishing wouldn't have a life jacket on if they were planning to go far enough away that they'd end up 40 miles from Montauk. Was it common back then for folks to not wear life jackets on small boats, or could this suggest something out of the ordinary happened? Maybe he intended to stop somewhere or someone else was involved? Just trying to make sense of this detail because it’s one of the few concrete things we know about his disappearance. Would love to hear what others think!
Did anyone else find it odd that David's dory was found with empty fuel tanks but still had other essentials like life jackets and fishing gear? I mean, why just run out of fuel and not try to contact someone or signal for help? I know it was 1979, but even then, you'd think there'd be some kind of backup plan, a flare, or something. What if he did send out an SOS but it never reached anyone? Also, the position of the boat—40 miles south of Montauk—seems quite a distance if fuel was an issue. Feels like something unexpected happened, like maybe a strong current pulled the boat further out. Just thinking out loud here. Anyone else have theories on the fuel situation?
