I came across something interesting in connection with Lowell Vern Daughenbaugh's case today. Numerous online discussions seem to focus on the abandoned truck, but I was reminded of something when looking into local happenings around Surry County during the time of his disappearance. There was a rise in violence and crime along the Interstate highways back in the '80s. Could it be possible that Lowell fell victim to one of the many highway robberies or crimes of opportunity that were reportedly common at the time? It's strange how the truck was left at a known truck stop with keys in the ignition as if there was no intention to keep it hidden. It's almost like whoever did this wasn't worried about being traced. Maybe they knew the area well? Wondering if any locals remember suspicious folks hanging around the Dixie Truck Stop back then or if anyone investigated other incidents in the area during those months.
I reported to the Surry County sheriff back in August that my stepfather murdered his cousin Poncho (Lowell). I guess they didn’t believe me because he’s still listed as missing. But I promise you he was shot and dismembered by his cousin Herb Ritchey who died about a year later. My mom was forced to drive him to hide the body parts in multiple dumpsters around Statesville. After she died in August 2024 I finally reported the crime. I feel better but it makes me sad that they perhaps have not told Poncho’s family. He’s dead and he never went to Texas.

I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to carry that burden for so long and then come forward, especially after the passing of your mother.

If what you’ve said is true, it’s incredibly important, and I’m sorry it feels like your report may not have been fully acknowledged. Cases like Poncho’s deserve closure, and his family deserves to know the truth.

Has anyone else come across information about the truck stop where Lowell's vehicle was found? I find it odd that the keys were left in the ignition, yet none of his personal stuff was inside. Could it be possible that someone else drove the truck there and tried to make it look like he abandoned it? The location seems so random, and I've heard mixed stories about the area back in '87. Maybe someone remembers something or knows if that truck stop had any history of questionable activities around that time. It's a real mystery that keeps me wondering if we're missing something crucial in this piece of the puzzle.
I've been following the disappearance of Lowell Vern Daughenbaugh for a while now and something about his case always catches my attention. It's intriguing how his gold 1973 Chevrolet truck was just left at the Dixie Truck Stop with the keys still in the ignition. It's like he just vanished into thin air. What's even weirder is that none of his belongings were found in the truck. It makes me wonder if he was forced to leave or if someone else drove it there. Given that investigators suspect foul play, I can’t help but think that truck might hold some vital clues that were overlooked back when it was first found. I’m curious if any fingerprints or DNA evidence were collected at the time. Does anyone know if that was ever mentioned in reports or updates?
Are you still following this case? I have reported what happened to Poncho (Lowell) but either I wasn’t believed or the family doesn’t want it public.
