It's been over 20 years since Rilya Wilson disappeared, and I still can't wrap my head around the massive oversight by the DCF. How did an entire year pass before anyone realized she was missing? I find it so unsettling that a vulnerable child could just vanish under the watch of a system meant to protect her. Was the caseload for social workers so overwhelming at the time that basic follow-ups were skipped, or was it just sheer negligence? Cases like this make me wonder about the effectiveness of child welfare systems across the country. We entrust them with the lives of children, and yet, they weren't even aware she was gone. Such a significant breakdown in the system should have never happened—thank goodness it led to some changes, but one can only hope it never happens again.
