Rilya Wilson, a 4-year-old girl, was last seen on January 18, 2001, in Miami, Florida. She had been under the care of Florida's Department of Children and Families (DCF), living with Geralyn Graham, her caregiver. However, Rilya's disappearance was not reported until April 2002, when a social worker attempted to visit her and discovered that she had been missing for over a year.
This significant delay in reporting raised widespread concerns about the oversight and accountability of the DCF.
Graham, who initially claimed that a DCF worker had taken Rilya for medical tests, later changed her story multiple times. Her conflicting statements, along with the delay in the DCF's awareness of Rilya's disappearance, complicated the investigation. Despite extensive searches, Rilya was never found, and authorities began to suspect foul play.
In 2005, Geralyn Graham was charged with first-degree murder after a jailhouse informant claimed she had confessed to killing Rilya. Graham allegedly said she had smothered the child and disposed of her body. Although Rilya’s remains were never recovered, Graham was convicted of kidnapping and child abuse in 2013 and sentenced to 55 years in prison.
