Remigio Herrera Hernandez, a 36-year-old fisherman also known to sometimes use the alias Raphael Sanchez, was lost at sea on June 11, 2002, about eight miles offshore from Noyo Harbor near Fort Bragg, California. While dropping fishing pots from a vessel he accidentally fell overboard. Crew members attempted an immediate rescue with a safety rope and ring buoy, and the U.S. Coast Guard mounted an extensive search by boat and helicopter, but Hernandez disappeared beneath the water and was never seen again.
He was wearing a yellow rain suit and black rubber boots and had a distinctive tattoo on his left arm. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office lists the case as open and classifies it as lost/injured missing; foul play is not suspected and he is presumed to have drowned though his body was never recovered. If anyone was on that trip or has information about Hernandez’s disappearance, please contact the Sheriff’s Office.?
