Did anyone else find it odd that Matthew Gale's boat had minimal safety gear despite undergoing recent upgrades? As someone who was meticulous in his professional life and clearly experienced with adventure activities, it seems out of character for him not to prioritize safety on the *Daisy*. I wonder if financial constraints played a role in this decision, or if perhaps there was some overconfidence due to familiarity with the Bay area waters. It's just puzzling, given the conditions that day were so severe. Also, I can't stop thinking about what triggered the decision to sail with so little gear. Any thoughts or theories?
Has anyone else looked into the background of the *Daisy* before it went missing? I find it curious that, despite being recently upgraded, the boat only had minimal safety gear onboard. With someone as experienced as Matthew Gale, you'd think there would be more precautionary measures in place. Was this a cost-cutting decision, or could it be a sign of overconfidence in their sailing abilities? Weather conditions that day were rough, and I've read several accounts that mention other boats in the race weren't significantly impacted. Could better safety measures in place have made a difference? It's such a sad reminder of how quickly things can change at sea.
I’ve been following Matthew Gale's case since it happened, and I’m curious about the weather conditions that day. Anyone in the sailing community know more about how common it is to race with swells that high and winds at 30 mph? Seems pretty intense, especially for just two people on a 31-foot boat. I know Gale was into adventurous stuff, but I wonder if there were discussions among the racers about postponing due to the weather. With his boat being recently upgraded, could it have been a case of misjudging how much the upgrades improved its seaworthiness? Sailing can be unpredictable, but this one seems like a tough call. Any insights from more experienced sailors would be appreciated!
