Hey everyone, I’ve been reading up on the Roger Kenneth Sawyer case from 2011. One part that really puzzles me is how an experienced outdoorsman could just vanish into thin air at a place like the Flamingo Campground. I get that Everglades National Park is vast and tricky territory with its share of wildlife and environmental hazards, but if Sawyer was as seasoned as reports suggest, you'd think he’d be well-prepared for a stroll near the beach. Is it possible he might have encountered something unexpected that even his experience couldn't handle? Or maybe there’s something about that specific location that hasn't been explored in past searches? Curious to hear what you all think could’ve happened in that two and a half hours when he was last seen.
I've been thinking about Roger Kenneth Sawyer's case and how perplexing it is that an experienced outdoorsman could vanish in such a way. What's nagging at me is the location - Everglades National Park. It's such a vast and challenging environment, filled with wildlife and unpredictable weather. Even though Sawyer was experienced, the Everglades is a different beast than the Oregon landscapes he knew. I wonder if his familiarity with the outdoors might have given him a false sense of security in such a different and potentially dangerous area. Did anyone else come across similar cases where seasoned wilderness enthusiasts seemed to have underestimated the terrain? It's as if the landscape itself swallowed him. Anyone familiar with the area who can shed light on just how easy it might be to get disoriented there?
