I was reading about the Mariam Debra Peters case, and something that struck me was the timing of the attack. It's genuinely terrifying to consider that it happened just before 8:30 p.m.—a time when many people are still out and about. It challenges the assumption that violence only lurks in the late hours when fewer people are around.
Mariam was just a teenager on her way to visit her grandfather—a trip so many of us have taken for granted, just traveling alone on public transit. The fact that her killer could strike so swiftly and then seem to disappear adds an eerie tension to the whole area surrounding that station. It makes me wonder how many witnesses might have inadvertently passed by the suspect moments after the attack, unaware that they were so close to someone capable of such brutality.
It's chilling to think that a public space like a subway station—where you'd assume you'd be safer with others around—could host such an act of violence. My thoughts are with Mariam's family and the enduring impact this case has had on them for all these years. I hope that someday, somehow, justice will be served.
