I’ve been deeply moved by the courage shown by Agapit Leblanc. As some of you might know, no one was ever held accountable for his murder, which just adds to the tragedy. What fascinates me is how his work tackling illegal smelt fishing during Prohibition must have intersected with the rampant alcohol smuggling. Coastal routes were lifelines for this illicit trade, and I wonder if his investigations uncovered something bigger than anyone anticipated. It’s just so tragic to think that his dedication to protecting marine resources might have inadvertently put him at odds with more dangerous forces involved in the alcohol trade. It certainly makes you question how many knew, but stayed silent because of fear or loyalty. Sending thoughts to his descendants and the Bouctouche community who still feel the weight of this unsolved case.
