You can't help but feel a deep empathy for her situation, trying to protect herself in whatever way she could imagine. It's a painful reminder of the vulnerability many women felt during that time. Knowing that she had made efforts to stay safe only to encounter such a tragic end is incredibly difficult to grasp. It speaks volumes about the climate of fear and the reality women faced during that summer in Michigan. My heart goes out to Karen's family, who must have agonized over the hopes she held for her future that would never come to pass.
