I recently stumbled across this tragic case from the winter of '86 involving Thomas Underwood's murder and found myself thinking a lot about the impact on Thomas’s family during those long three years without answers. I can't even begin to comprehend the pain and uncertainty they must have felt, living day in and day out not knowing who took their loved one away so violently. The community feeling the absence of justice must have made the weight even harder to bear.
When the confession finally came from Michael Durocher, I imagine it was a bittersweet moment for Thomas’s loved ones. On one hand, finally having a name and a face to associate with this tragic event must have been a relief. On the other, knowing that the person responsible had been walking free for some time, even while serving time for yet another crime, could not have been easy to digest.
It’s a small comfort that Durocher was held accountable in the end, but it's tragic that his criminal actions had left so much devastation in their wake. Reading about how his confession tied Thomas’s case to a larger pattern of violence makes me wonder how many other families Durocher’s crimes affected. I truly hope Thomas’s family found some peace after the verdict, even if it doesn’t erase the pain they endured over those long years.
