I’ve been thinking a lot about how this case highlights the challenges some people face when trying to leave abusive relationships. Vanessa seemed to be trying to get away from an awful situation by staying with a friend, but even that didn’t keep her safe. It’s deeply concerning how, even with the support system she had, the danger still followed. It's so important for communities to support those who are trying to escape situations like this, but there also must be systemic change to improve protection and resources for people at risk. My heart goes out to Vanessa's family and her two boys—especially as they navigate life without her.
