Hi everyone,
I just can't stop thinking about the systemic failures that allowed Donald Harvey's actions to go unnoticed for so long. The hospital environment, especially one dealing with critically ill patients like Drake Memorial, inherently comes with its vulnerabilities. But how did it get to the point where multiple deaths, like that of Albert Buehlmann, didn't raise flags?
It seems like there was a grimly perfect storm: patients were already gravely ill, so any decline in their condition wouldn't be unexpected; staff like Harvey had access to patients and the means to administer poisons without oversight; and, perhaps most distressingly, a lack of communication among hospital personnel about these sudden deaths.
I wonder how the staff felt when everything came to light. They must have been riddled with both guilt and shock, realizing someone they'd worked alongside was a monster in disguise. I hope that in the aftermath, hospitals everywhere took stronger steps to prevent someone as malicious as Harvey from ever slipping through the cracks again.
RIP Albert and all the others. May their families find peace knowing their loved ones are not forgotten.
Would love to know your thoughts on how hospitals have improved oversight since cases like this.
