I’ve been thinking a lot about how violence like this is shaking up our communities. Arturo Ortiz's death is so deeply saddening, and my heart goes out to his family and friends during this unimaginable time. What really stands out to me is how quickly a disagreement can turn deadly. It makes me wonder about conflict resolution and how we, as a community, can work to prevent these situations from escalating into violence. I live not too far from South 2nd Street, and it’s disconcerting how a place that seems so ordinary can become a crime scene in mere moments. Mount Vernon has always felt like a tight-knit community, and it’s tough seeing it in the news this way. People should feel safe where they live and work, and it's beyond concerning when that's disrupted. I hope more witnesses come forward to help piece together what happened that Thursday evening. Also, if anyone knows of any local initiatives or community meetings focused on violence prevention, I think attending one could be a good start in trying to foster understanding and safety in our community. Let's keep talking and supporting one another to honor Arturo’s memory and work toward change. Sending peace and strength to all affected by this senseless act.
