Was anyone else surprised that the authorities didn't delay their maintenance trip given the forecasted strong winds on December 7, 2001? I mean, weather conditions on the water can turn dangerous so quickly, especially when you're in something as small and precarious as a kayak. I wonder if there were any conversations between Nicholas Howard Buttle and Eric Hammer about the risks before they set out. It seems like there might have been red flags that were ignored here. Also, has anyone read anything more about the decision-making involved that day? Just curious if there were any other factors that might have influenced their choice to go out despite the warnings.
