Hey everyone, I’ve been following the Steven Jones case and one thing that's been on my mind is the role of mental health crisis intervention teams (CIT) in situations like these. It’s so incredibly tragic that someone in such a vulnerable state ended up losing their life in a manner like this. With Steven clearly experiencing a mental health episode, it seems that having professionals specifically trained for these situations might have impacted how things played out. I've been reading up on other cases where CITs were able to de-escalate without resorting to deadly force, and it just makes me wonder why these teams aren't standard everywhere, especially in bigger cities like Hartford. It seems like it should be a high priority to offer officers this support. It’s obviously a tough job they’re doing, and having specialized backup when someone's mental health is at stake seems crucial. To anyone impacted by Steven’s death, please know that there are folks out here thinking of you. No one should have to experience this kind of loss, and it’s a stark reminder of the changes needed in how mental health crises are handled by law enforcement. What do you all think? Would having a CIT involved have changed the outcome? Sending thoughts and love to Steven's family and friends during this time.
