I've been thinking a lot about the victim's family, especially his son Damien, in the wake of this senseless tragedy. Losing a loved one is never easy, but to have it happen in such a violent and unexpected manner must be unimaginably difficult. It’s clear that Joe Starkey meant so much to those around him, not just as a musician, but as a father, husband, and friend. I can't help but feel that the justice system isn’t working as it should for this family. I understand that "Stand Your Ground" laws can be complex, but the fact that someone can take a life and not immediately face any consequences is mind-boggling to me. It's hard to see how standing your ground applies when Joe was simply trying to talk things through without escalating the situation further. My heart goes out to Damien and the rest of Joe’s family as they navigate such a frustrating and painful process. It’s hard to stay hopeful for justice, but I truly believe that continuing to share Joe’s story and keeping the pressure on can help bring the truth to light. They deserve answers and accountability, for Joe’s sake and for their own peace of mind.
