I can't shake the feeling of what's becoming of our parks and community spaces. Jaceil Banks's tragic death is a shocking reminder of how quickly violence can shatter a sense of security. He was participating in a simple community basketball event, something meant to bring people together. It's so upsetting to think of the families and kids who were there just to enjoy an evening at the park, only to be engulfed in chaos and fear. My thoughts go out to Jaceil's loved ones and especially to Anthonaya Campbell and all the other victims who are facing a long road to recovery. The collective trauma for those present must be overwhelming. Seeing such a young defendant list — two teenagers among the accused — just underscores how deep the roots of violence and its recruiting can stretch. It makes me wonder what more can be done to prevent young people from being swayed onto these destructive paths. How do we re-weave community, trust, and peace in places that see too many headlines like this? Hoping for some real change grounded in compassion and proactivity from the community and city leaders alike.
