An 81-year-old woman, her 61-year-old daughter and a 39-year-old grandson were killed in a home on Scottsdale Drive in Haubstadt, Indiana, in what police describe as a domestic dispute that escalated to a triple homicide. The elder victim, Gloria Tapia Garcia, was bedridden and was shot and killed while lying in her medical bed. A fourth family member, another grandson, survived gunshot wounds to the neck and chest.

Authorities arrested 77-year-old Patrick Waite, the husband of Alma Waite, at the scene after several people called 911. Deputies say Waite surrendered, told them he was the shooter, and led them to a .45 Smith & Wesson handgun. Police say a child witnessed one of the killings and was found hiding in a bedroom.

Investigators say the dispute began over ownership of the house; Waite reportedly had lived there 27 years and had been married to Alma about two years, and Alma had told him she filed a quitclaim deed transferring the property into her mother’s name. Police say Waite told detectives he shot his wife first and then shot the other family members in the den. He was charged with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder and pleaded not guilty at his first court appearance; he is being held without bond.
