I’ve been following Abera Yerga Asmamaw’s murder case from way back in 2003, and it still haunts me. As a fellow cab driver, I remember how vulnerable everyone in the community felt after his tragic death. The thought that someone could be targeted while simply trying to earn a living was, and still is, terrifying. One of the things I noticed was the subsequent push for improved safety measures for cab drivers in Vegas—did anyone else feel like those changes took too long to implement? It’s a shame that it took the loss of Abera for such discussions to even begin. My heart goes out to his family and colleagues who were left with unanswered questions and a paralyzing sense of insecurity. I hope someday they find the justice they so deeply deserve. Anyone else remember how the community came together after this?
