Did anyone else see the vigil they held for Michelle Johnson on North Desert Avenue? I couldn't make it, but a friend shared some pictures with me, and it was quite moving. So many people came together to honor her memory and stand up against domestic violence. It really touched me to see how much support there was for Michelle and her loved ones. It's just so hard to understand how things got to this point when everything feels so preventable in hindsight. Thinking of her family and all who are wrestling with this loss. Has anyone heard if there'll be any ongoing community efforts or support groups stemming from this tragedy?
I've been following this tragic case out of Tucson and wanted to drop a thought about the justice system's handling of repeat offenders. It’s gut-wrenching to see how Michael Duran was released despite the serious charges against him. The fact that these terrible events unfolded after he was granted release is devastating. Michelle Johnson was clearly in a perilous situation. I have to wonder if stricter measures could have prevented this. It's so important for the system to recognize the full scope of danger in cases with a history of domestic violence. My heart goes out to Michelle's family and friends; they deserved a safer outcome. Does anyone else feel that preventative intervention could have made a difference here? How do we balance rights and safety better?
