I cannot stop thinking about the immense courage it must have taken for those who survived the arson attack to make the terrifying decision to leap from a second-story window in the dead of night. The survivors were faced with a split-second decision that meant life or death. It’s horrifying to imagine the panic and urgency of that moment, and it's a testament to their sheer will to survive in such dire circumstances. It's so tragic that the loss of five family members—including two young children—was the backdrop to this desperate act of survival. We often focus on the details of guilt and jurisprudence, which are of course critically important, but we mustn't forget the human lives caught up in these monstrous events. For Amadou Beye, mourning the loss of his wife Hassan and daughter Hawa while dealing with the aftermath must be incredibly difficult. His courage, and that of other family members, is truly remarkable as they navigate through life after such an unimaginable loss. It's so important to continue supporting them as their community and provide whatever aid we can.
