The senseless loss of Anna and Yelena Bulchenko still weighs heavily on my mind. I’ve been thinking a lot about what Yelena must have gone through when she returned home that day. Walking into a scene like that—it's unimaginable. She had probably just left a normal day, expecting to go home and relax, and instead walked into her worst nightmare. The fact that Gelman had such an obsession with her yet hadn’t posed any direct threat before just adds another terrifying layer to this tragedy.
I also find it so painful to think about how Yelena didn’t even have a moment to process what had happened to her mother. She couldn’t call for help or make sense of the chaos before Gelman turned on her. Her reaction to run outside shows that she didn’t see this coming at all. It breaks my heart to think of how her life was so cruelly cut short just as it was beginning.
This case really brings to light how quickly life can change and how reliant we have become on understanding the 'why' in violent acts. In so many ways, this tragedy almost feels beyond understanding. Thinking of both Anna and Yelena, and the rest of their family devastated by this, fills me with a profound sadness. They deserved so much more.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around how Gelman's actions all started with some argument over a car. It's mind-boggling that something so trivial could spiral into the horrific events that took Anna and Yelena from this world. Anna was just going about her day in the safety of her home, and Yelena, coming back to what should have been her sanctuary, walked straight into a nightmare she couldn’t escape. My heart goes out to all who knew them; such an unimaginable loss.
The randomness of it all is terrifying. No one saw this level of violence coming from Gelman, and yet here we are, trying to process a tragedy that seems to have had no real trigger or reason. It's just a reminder of how unpredictable and fragile life really can be.
Has anyone heard anything more about the psychological evaluations? I hope they tell us something concrete, though I fear there's not much that can explain the kind of chaos he unleashed. Stay safe out there, everyone.
