I’ve been thinking a lot about the bravery of Specialist Frederick Greene during the Fort Hood attack. Charging at an armed gunman with nothing but courage to protect his fellow soldiers is beyond admirable. It’s difficult to imagine the kind of instinct and selflessness that it took for Specialist Greene to decide to take such a stand. Despite the tragedy, I find some comfort in knowing his incredible actions are remembered through his posthumous honors and local memorials like the bridge in Mountain City. For his family, who had to endure such a profound loss, I hope they find strength in the legacy he left behind. It must have been so difficult navigating through the initial aftermath without the full recognition of their loss, but at least later changes in legislation allowed Specialist Greene to receive the honors he rightfully deserved. It’s a stark reminder of how crucial it is for our systems to promptly recognize and honor the sacrifices of our brave servicemen and women.
