Hey everyone,
I've been following the tragic case of Louis and Lola Mercer from 1965 and wanted to discuss something that's been on my mind about the neighbors' role in this. It's incredible to think about how Lola's screams brought the neighbors rushing over, potentially saving her life. I can't even begin to imagine the courage it must have taken for them to intervene, not knowing what dangers awaited them inside that apartment. In those moments, they probably had no idea if they'd be facing the perpetrator or what kind of violence was still unfolding inside.
While we now know how things ended sadly for Louis, their quick response at least gave Lola a fighting chance at survival. I wonder if any of them ever kept in touch with Lola over the years or if they were able to find some peace knowing they did what they could. It's these acts of bravery that really stand out, even amid such a horrific crime.
And to think it took decades to find Wilkerson — I can only hope that with modern advances, fewer families have to wait so long for answers and justice. How does everyone else feel about the role of community in cases like this? Do you think today's community responses would be different? Would love to hear your thoughts.
Warm regards,
