I've been thinking a lot about Kim Yvette Smith, also known by the endearing nickname "Candy." From all accounts, she seemed like such a vibrant soul, deeply connected to her family and community in Cleveland. It’s deeply troubling how someone so full of life could go missing for so long without the urgency the situation deserved. Knowing her story, I've been reflecting on how society fails to notice when marginalized women disappear. It's a profound tragedy that it took something as gruesome as the discovery at Sowell's home for people to start caring about these missing women. Kim’s background as an artist and singer, especially as a backup for Gerald Levert, just shows the multifaceted life she led—a life that shouldn’t have been forgotten by the system. My heart goes out to her family and those who knew and loved her. I hope by sharing her story, we can push for a better response and respect for those who are often overlooked in the future.
