I’ve been thinking a lot about Kathy Annette Allen, especially knowing she was so close to achieving something both brave and joyful: participating in the Special Olympics. It breaks my heart to think about all the moments she never got to experience, especially those where she could have shone on that track or field, feeling proud, cheered on by her family, despite her challenges. The fact that she was taken the night before is gut-wrenching. I wonder if anyone remembers more about how the community came together back then, supporting the Allens during such a dark time? It's always significant to see how communities respond to tragedy, and I imagine Ottumwa did what they could. Kathy’s story makes me even more thankful for those who work tirelessly in special education and similar programs, lifting up kids like Kathy every single day. My thoughts are with Kathy’s family, especially her sister Christine, who had to endure such an unimaginably traumatic night. I hope they have found some form of peace in knowing the perpetrators were caught and justice was served, even if it doesn't bring Kathy back.

I can't stop thinking about the impact on Christine, Kathy’s older sister. She was right there in the house when everything unfolded. I can’t imagine the emotional scars from witnessing such a horrifying event and losing her sister under those circumstances. She was nearly an adult herself, yet forced into a situation where she had to deal with unimaginable trauma alongside her parents’ injuries and loss. It makes you wonder about the long-term effects on siblings who go through something like this. It's not just about the immediate aftermath, but also how it shapes the rest of their lives. Support systems and therapy are critical, but I hope Christine found ways to cope and heal over the years. Her resilience must be incredible, and my heart truly goes out to her and the entire Allen family.
