I've been thinking a lot lately about how this case highlights the dangers of manipulating trust within close-knit communities. Sherri was a dedicated student trying her best to provide a future for her children despite her circumstances. From everything I've read, people at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind seemed like a supportive group, and having someone like Daniel Siebert just infiltrate and exploit that environment is gut-wrenching.
It's terrifying how quickly he was able to gain their trust and integrate into their lives, considering the rules against staff-student relationships. It seems like Sherri had a lot of potential, and she was working hard to overcome barriers—many of which were probably tough to imagine for those not in her situation. It makes me wonder about the kind of safety nets there were, or perhaps weren't, back in the '80s to protect students like her from predatory behavior. The impact of this kind of betrayal is just unfathomable—not only did it result in a devastating loss, but it also shattered the sense of security for that entire community. Sherri, Chad, and Joseph deserved so much better.
